Cruit Island has a strong musical heritage. Local musician Seán McBride wrote the famous Irish ballad “The Homes of Donegal” in 1955.
Cruit is connected to the mainland at Belcruit by a bridge built at the time of World War II.

The name “Cruit” (pronounced “Critch”) is derived from the Irish “An Chruit” meaning ‘the hump or little hillock’ although it is also the old Irish word for the harp.
